We had a phenomenal tour this morning of the old Lee County Courthouse, led by county administrator Jeremy Englund. The students were able to get a behind the scenes look at the assessment office where they learned about property valuation and gis mapping. They then met with the treasurers office to understand how taxes are collected and distributed to various government bodies. There was a quick stop at the clerk’s office, the elections area, the zoning department, and finally the old courtroom. The building was built in 1901 and still has many original elements including marble floors, copper handrails, and stained glass windows. We ran out of time, so this may be a tour we have to do a second visit to!
